What is social audio?

Social audio is probably one of the hottest spaces right now because it just so happens to be the right cure to our quarantine blues and Zoom fatigue! Just using messaging apps lacks the human element and more video calling/screen time gets physically draining, so social audio bridges the gap between texting and video-calling.

In fact: Social audio platforms enable users to have live audio conversations with anyone in the space. That’s one big reason why social audio is so popular because you’re not limited to interacting with just your friends — professionals in the industry, celebrities, influencers, you name it! Platforms also have other interactive social media features to keep users engaged as they tune into different conversations of interest. With social audio’s explosive popularity, the social audio space offers many emerging opportunities to innovate in this space!

What are Twitter Spaces?

Twitter Spaces is Twitter’s new social audio platform that they are currently building and testing. It’s a platform for Twitter users to interact with each other beyond Tweets in live chatrooms called Spaces. As Twitter Spaces is a new platform, Twitter is looking to expand its features and include a desktop version that is integrated with their main Twitter platform.

How do I get on Twitter Spaces?

As of now, Twitter Spaces is only available on iOS and Android devices! iOS users are able to join, listen, and speak whereas Android users can only join and speak. Desktop users, don’t worry! Twitter is expecting to make Spaces available to all users very soon.

What is the difference between Clubhouse and Twitter Spaces?

Clubhouse is the main forerunner of the social audio space right now, but Twitter Spaces makes itself a strong competitor to the extremely popular social audio platform. Both platforms enable users to create and/or join live audio conversations, but there are some key differences between the two apps:

Clubhouse is still only available to iOS users and the lucky people who got the long-coveted Clubhouse invite! Twitter is available to all iOS and Android users.

  • Clubhouse allows anyone to start a room. On the other hand, only some Twitter Space users are able to create a space right now.

  • Clubhouse requires users to use their real identities, but Twitter Spaces users use their Twitter account usernames.

Determining which platform is better depends on the user themselves as both platforms offer their own take on live audio conversations.
